The feature of the fracture surface was examined by SEM and three kinds of fracture mechanisms were determined as follows; 1. quasi-shear fracture; 2. dimple fracture, and 3. quasi-cleavege.
The fractograph exhibited typical ductile dimple fracture pattern.
By way of suitable heat treatment, the tensile fracture morphology changes from brittle intercrystalline fracture to dimple fracture, so the strength and ductility of the alloy is increased.
High manganese steels undergo a ductile to brittle transition at low temperature, which is accompanied by a change in the fracture mechanism from dimple fracture to intergranular fracture.
