Farmers in Niger, in Africa's Sahel region, have replanted trees on 5 million hectares (12 million acres) of degraded land since 1975, improving the region's water supply and reducing conflict.
"This is an area that's been planted on degraded land," Shapiro says, giving a tour of the three-acre research plot.
