It also had its eye on Alcan, a big French-Canadian aluminum operator, but was outbid last year by Rio Tinto.
Alcan is a handy asset-the vast amounts of energy required to smelt aluminium are supplied by reliable, cheap hydroelectricity.
The technology was originally discovered by Alcan international-now Rio Tinto alcan-and Norsk Hydro of Norway, while developing wear-resistant aluminum products.
Rio's offer for Riversdale is its first attempt at a sizeable acquisition since a disastrous purchase of Alcan in 2007.
