TheancientkingdomofEgyptlayalongthefertile(肥沃的)valleyof...

The ancient kingdom of Egypt lay along the fertile (肥沃的) valley of the Nile River in northeastern Africa. For nearly three millennia(千年), the Egyptian kings ruled one of the ancient world’s richest and most powerful nations. So long was Egypt’s history that modern writers measure its time not in years but in dynasties.

According to the legend (傳說), a ruler named Menes was the first to unite the lands of northern and southern Egypt, an event that historians date to around 3100 B.C. Menes established the First Dynasty, and this event marks the beginning of the ancient Egyptian kingdom. At about the same time as the unification(統一) of  Egypt came important advances in agriculture, metalworking, transportation, and communication in the Nile valley and in the Delta region where the Nile spreads out into several branches before reaching the Mediterranean Sea. During this time, the Egyptians also invented a system of hieroglyphs, or picture symbols to record important events.

Menes and the other kings of the First Dynasty ruled during a period of Egyptian history known as the Old Kingdom. At this time, the city of Memphis, just south of the Nile Delta, served as the capital of ancient Egypt. As Egypt’s population increased, the kings ruling Memphis set about conquering(征服) neighboring lands, and as a result the realm(王國) grew wealthier. Menes’ successor, a king named Aha, invaded(入侵) Nubia, the land lying south of Egypt. Another First Dynasty king, Den, successfully fought the Bedouin, a people who lived in the deserts lying both to the east and west of the Nile valley.
