約翰·卡爾·弗里德里希·高斯(Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss ,1777年4月30日-1855年2月23日)德國著名數學家、物理學家、天文學家、大地測量學家。是近代數學奠基者之一,高斯被認爲是歷史上最重要的數學家之一,並享有“數學王子”之稱。高斯和阿基米德、牛頓並列爲世界三大數學家。一生成就極爲豐碩,以他名字“高斯”命名的成果達110個,屬數學家中之最。他對數論、代數、統計、分析、微分幾何、大地測量學、地球物理學、力學、靜電學、天文學、矩陣理論和光學皆有貢獻。

It may be true, that men, who are mere mathematicians, have certain specific shortcomings, but that is not the fault of mathematics, for it is equally true of every other exclusive occupation.
